Week 13 Library Catalogs

This week we took a look at a public library catalog and an academic library catalog. I passed out Homework 8. I gave students their 12 week progress reports. If you missed class, I put a copy in your student mailbox in academics.

Next week the database project is due. Copies of the project can be found here. There are ONLY two more class meetings. Next week we will look at Self-Service Banner and the online bookstore, so if you have no ordered your books this would be a good class to attend. In self service banner you can access financial aid information and your schedule.

Week 12 Questionpoint

This week I did a demonstration on QuestionPoint. I assigned a homework 7 on QuestionPoint. It can be found here. I also passed out the database project and the process essay. The database project is due December 11th and the process essay is due December 18th.

There are only three weeks left in the semester.

Next week we will be talking about library catalogs and I will post the last homework on the web.

Week 11 MovieMaker

This week we worked on an extra credit assignment using moviemaker. You have until the end of the semester to complete it. When you finsih your movie, please submit it through youtube. You will need to create an account with youtube and then send a message through youtube to albanyinfolit.

Next week, we will have a quiz.

Week 10 More Databases

In class we took a look at some of the other databases. We took a look at Mergent (Business Database), Legal Collection (EbscoHost Database) and Opposing viewpoints. These database all have very unique and interesting collections. There was a quiz and Homework 6 was due. The descriptive project was also due. I did notice that some students forgot the cover page, reference page or the Smarthinking response.

In class next week we will be doing Windows Movie Maker and students who owe back work will have some time to work. The movie you create will be worth 4 point extra credit. Feel free to bring pictures, music or videos to incorportate in your movie.

Week 9 Databse Introduction

In the beginning of class I gave students time to post their descriptive rough draft to Smarthinking. I went through a handout on searching EbscoHost. Homework 6 is available here. The Narrative Project was due this week and the descriptive will be due next week. I will be handing out another Project on the 13th, so if you are behind this is the time to catch-up.

Week 8 Subject Directories/Smarthinking

This week we looked at Google Directory (www.google.com/dirhp) and Yahoo Directory (dir.yahoo.com). Subject directories can be useful if you don't know what you want to research or if you are getting too much information and you want to narrow it down. This week I passes out the Descriptive Project and the Source Evaluation sheets. They can be found here. The rough draft is due November 6th and you will submit them to smarthinking. Smarthinking is an online tutoring service. Your username is your Bryant & Stratton e-mail address and the password is the last four of your SSN.

Next week we will be talking about Databases. Please read 55-64 in Research Strategies for the Digital Age.

Week 7 Web Searching

In class we explored the advance search option in Google. Most student completed homework 5 in class. The homework is a series of questions that can be answered using the web. The student needs to record the search string, the url and the answer to the question. The search string is what you enter into the search box in the search engine. The url is the web address to the website that contains the answer to the question. I also did a quick citation demonstration.

I passed out the narrative, which will be due on 11/6. If you are taking Human Relations you should already have a copy of the assignment.

Next week we will be looking at subject directories and I will give you a copy of the next project. We will start this project in class and you will have two weeks to complete the project outside of class.

Week 6 Web Evaluation

This week we watched a DVD about evaluation and evaluated two websites together. There was a quiz and homework 4 was assigned. A copy of the homework can be found here. Next week we will be talking about web searching. Please read 1-38 in the Internet Research Textbook. There will be a quiz.

Week 5 Plagiarism/Print citation

In class this week the topic was plagiarism and print citation. A copy of the powerpoint can be found here, as well as homework 3. During the in-class we used knightcite to generate 5 APA citations. If you are unfamiliar with APA citation I would recommend using this service to generate a reference page for Homework 3. Next week we will be discussing web evaluation. In order to get you thinking about evaluation I assigned blog post 2. Most of the students submitted their post during class. If you have not done it, please post a comment under the free sandwich post. I sent e-mail to the class on how to access your grade for the course. If you have questions please contact me.

Free Sandwich

Imagine you are walking down the street and come across a person handing out free sandwiches.

Would you take the sandwich?
What questions might you have?

Think about this scenario for a few minutes and then tell me if you would or wouldn't accept the free offer. Write down some questions you would want the answers to before taking the sandwich.

Week 4

This week we learned about the Bryant & Stratton e-mail system. You can find a handout on using the e-mail system here. Next week there will be a quiz on using e-mail. Homework 2 can be found here. It should be submitted before class on Tuesday. Please read 97-105 in Research for the Digital Age. We will be discussing Plagiarism and print citation. Four week progress reports can be found at Thinkwave.com. Directions on how to access your grades were made available in your student folder last week. If you did not get them, I will be sending them out through e-mail.

Week 3 Sept.25th

Who is Mrs. Abbott?

I have a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering and a Masters Degree in Library Science. I am a roller coaster junkie. I have ridden over 300 different coasters. I rode the tallest and fastest coaster, Kingda Ka, in New Jersey. My son will be two in February. Here is a picture of him with his rocking horse. My husband and I are hockey fans and have season hockey tickets to RPI.
